Lima Surf City Festival

The Lima Surf City Festival is Peru’s major professional surfing event, held annually at Punta Hermosa, a point break approximately 40 kilometres south of Lima’s city centre. The event typically carries WSL (World Surf League) Challenger Series status, drawing ranked professional surfers from across South America, Australia, the United States, and Europe. For surf fans, it is the best opportunity to see world-class professional surfing in Peru at close range.

The venue: Punta Hermosa

Punta Hermosa has a reputation as one of the most consistent beach breaks in South America. The wave at Kon Tiki - the main break used for competition - is a powerful beach break that works well on the southern swell patterns that hit Peru’s coast in the austral winter months of July and August. The cold Humboldt Current keeps water temperatures low (around 17-18°C in August) but ensures reliable surf conditions during the contest window.

The beach at Punta Hermosa is narrow and can feel crowded during competition days, but the setup allows spectators to watch heats from the sand within close range of the break. There are no grandstands - viewing is on the beach itself.

What to expect at the festival

Competition heats run during the mornings and afternoons across roughly nine days, subject to swell and wind conditions. Lay days are called when conditions are poor. The format follows standard WSL Challenger Series structure, with heats progressively reducing to a final.

Beyond the competition itself, the festival area has food stalls, sponsor activations, and often live music in the evenings. Local surf brands, beach equipment vendors, and food trucks line the area behind the beach. The atmosphere is relaxed by the standards of major sporting events - entry to the beach area to watch heats is generally free, though parking and transport need to be planned in advance.

Getting there from Lima

Punta Hermosa is not served by Lima’s public transport network in any practical way. The most straightforward options are:

• Taxi or rideshare: From Miraflores or Barranco, a taxi to Punta Hermosa takes around 45 minutes to one hour depending on traffic, and costs approximately USD 25 to USD 40 each way as of 2026.
• Shuttle services: During major events, some guesthouses and surf schools in Punta Hermosa run shuttle services from central Lima.
• Rental car: Gives the most flexibility, particularly if you want to arrive early for good beach positioning.

Practical tips

• The Pacific at Punta Hermosa is cold in August. A wetsuit is needed to surf; spectators should bring an extra layer as the sea breeze makes it feel cooler than the inland temperature suggests.
• Bring sunscreen - overcast skies on Lima’s coast in August do not mean reduced UV exposure.
• Check the official WSL website and the festival’s social media channels for the daily heat schedule, as it shifts based on wave conditions and lay days are common.
• Accommodation options in Punta Hermosa itself are limited and book out during the festival period. Most visitors stay in Lima and travel down on competition days.
